Kayla Hoang

Baker, recipe tester, recipe developer

Hi and welcome! My name is Kayla, writing to you from the good ol' Garden State. Food has always been my passion and through this blog I hope to share that passion with all of you.

From as early as I can remember, I've been fortunate enough to be surrounded by the most delicious food a person could imagine. Much of that is thanks to my mom, who was born in Bangladesh, and my dad, who was born in Vietnam. My parents introduced my brother and me to traditional Bengali and Vietnamese foods at a very young age and so we've been eating foods with big flavors (and big spice) since we could chew. I'm talking about things like fall-off-the-bone Bengali roast chicken, my Grandmother's flaky homemade paratha, and my Dad's crispy bánh xèo. My culture has shaped the way I look at food and while I haven't mastered the art of South Asian cooking yet, I do make sure to pack my food with the most flavor possible.

If I had to choose between sweet and savory, I'd choose sweet every time. Baking is my own self-proclaimed niche. I've been taking on big baking projects since I was 13 and have loved every moment of it. In 2015 I decided to follow that passion all the way to Johnson and Wales. I graduated from Johnson and Wales University's P-4 Baking and Pastry Program in 2019. During that time, I studied pastry abroad for 2 months at Alain Ducasse's Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Pâtisserie in Yssingeaux, France.

Upon graduating in 2019, I interned for the Food Development Team at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. I then completed a fellowship at Food Network under the Digital Team. Under both companies, I further honed my skills in the kitchen while learning to recipe test and develop. Currently, I am a freelance recipe tester and recipe developer working mainly in NYC.

If you don't already know me, you'll quickly learn about my very apparent love for all things carbs and chocolate chip cookies and that I love a sprinkle of sea salt on (almost) all of my sweets. Baking projects are the most fun for me and you'll find no shortage here.

I'm a firm believer in taking your time and enjoying the process when it comes to cooking and baking. That's when it's the most cathartic for me and it's the reason I fell in love with it. More than anything, I hope the recipes you find here allow you to do the same.
